Industry faces an engineering crisis too?!
I’ve blogged about the maintenance crisis once or twice: Who’s gonna replace retiring maintenance pros?
Now I hear there’s an engineering crisis as well: Kids don’t want to be engineers. As soon as next year, we’ll be short 70,000 (engineers, not kids).
A survey from the American Society for Quality (ASC) paints this picture of kids and engineering:
- About half don’t know what it is.
- 1 in 3 thinks it’s boring.
- 1 in 5 thinks he’s not good enough in math and science—though these are the two best-liked school subjects.
- 1 in 5 parents steers a kid toward engineering, including 1 girl out of 10.
An ASC rep says this casts a shadow over the future of innovation, quality and that word I’m hearing more and more: infrastructure.
Man, this blogging is opening my eyes …
